Blueprint

Samsung MU8000 Design Picture

Curved No

The design of the MU8000 is not bad. The stand may be likewise wide for most tables, but information technology supports the TV well and looks good. The borders are very pocket-sized, and the Tv is very sparse so it looks good on a wall or freestanding. The design is an improvement upon the KS8000 from 2016 with the addition of cable management.

Samsung MU8000 Stand Picture

The MU8000 has a similar wide stand up to the KS8000 from last year. Information technology supports the TV well and feels stable, and also provides cable management routing through the left leg. Unfortunately the remainder of the power cablevision is quite short (25.2") when routed through the tracks. There are two stand positions available on the 55" model: the narrower position is pictured.

Footprint of the 55" Tv set stand: 9.7" 10 35.5". There is a secondary wider stand position which is 9.7" x 43.4".

Samsung MU8000 Back Picture

Wall Mount VESA 400x400

The rear of the Goggle box has a textured terminate very similar to the 2016 KS9000 and KU7000. It looks practiced and has tracks for cable management (visible here). There are spacers included in the box for wall mounting.

Samsung MU8000 Borders Picture

Borders 0.31" (0.8 cm)

The borders are very sparse and await good, similar to the KS8000. The cease is a bit dissimilar though.

Samsung MU8000 Thickness Picture

Max Thickness 2.09" (5.3 cm)

The Telly is quite thin when viewed from the side and would look proficient when wall-mounted.

Samsung MU8000 Temperature picture

Maximum Temperature 100 °F (38 °C)

Average Temperature 91 °F (33 °C)

The TV stays fairly cool even after extended utilise, only getting a footling warm to the touch along the bottom. The OneConnect box also stays cool, never getting hotter than 32 °C.

Samsung MU8000 Build quality picture

The build quality of the MU8000 has improved slightly upon the KS8000 from 2016. The back feels to be more secure, and the joins are more flush.

Flick Quality

Samsung MU8000 Checkerboard Picture

Native Contrast 4,723 : one

Contrast with local dimming 4,727 : ane

The native contrast ratio is great on the Samsung MU8000. The high contrast will let the Boob tube produce deep black scenes, specially when viewed in a dark environment.

The dissimilarity ratio, when local dimming is set up to 'High', is near the same (4727:1) as the native contrast ratio. When turned on, the local dimming doesn't really make blacks deeper when measured on our checkerboard blueprint. This is because the local dimming feature on the MU8000 doesn't work well.

Local Dimming Yes

Backlight Edge

The local dimming feature of the MU8000 is bad. When compared adjacent with the Q7F, both perform almost the aforementioned way. It is an edge-lit TV and vertical blooming is visible which follows the bright moving highlight. When watching a flick, blooming is visible in the 2 black confined. Even if the local dimming is not the all-time, enabling it is still recommended particularly for HDR content every bit it is necessary to produce bright highlights.

Great SDR peak brightness. Under certain conditions local dimming can make pocket-sized areas incredibly vivid, but this just lasts for a short time. In normal usage, the Tv will rarely hit this peak, but its sustained brightness is still good plenty for fifty-fifty brilliant rooms. Unlike the Q7F the backlight algorithm doesn't dim scenes of loftier APL (eg. 100% white window), which is an advantage for rooms with glare. The difference between the Q7F and MU8000 brightness in moving picture mode can be seen here.

Decent HDR superlative effulgence. The Boob tube is able to bear witness all content at a decent brightness, and is able to utilise local dimming to make small highlights even brighter for a short time. The Q7F tin become brighter windows in test patterns (see here), only the real scene brightness reflects performance in normal content and the MU8000 performs slightly improve in this test.

Samsung MU8000 5% Uniformity Picture

v% Std. Dev. 0.867%

5% DSE 0.080%

The overall gray uniformity is skillful for this Samsung TV. The standard deviation is a bit high though, and this is caused by some darker regions on the screen, especially on both sides. The bottom edge is also a bit problematic since the left side is a fleck darker than the correct side.

Luckily the Tv set'southward dirty screen effect is less problematic, leaving the middle region of the screen mostly even. When watching content like football game or hockey, where panning shots are more frequent, you don't really notice any muddied screen effect.

The five% gray uniformity is also very good. the standard deviation and dirty screen effect numbers are even better than the 50% grey, and when looking at our test picture, nothing really negative can be noticed.

Samsung MU8000 Native Black Uniformity Picture

Samsung MU8000 Black Uniformity Picture with Local Dimming

Std. Dev. w/ Fifty.D. i.315%

Black uniformity is decent on the MU8000. No clouding can exist seen in the corners or well-nigh the bottom border, a trouble often seen on LED TVs.

When the local dimming is set up to maximum, the primal vertical blooming is a bit more than obvious since both sides of the Television receiver are even darker. This is the primary reason why the standard deviation number is higher.

Notation that dissimilar the 2016 Samsung TVs with local dimming, this feature tin't exist turned off completely on the MU8000 in order to prove the TV's true native blackness uniformity. As such, the native black uniformity test picture was taken with 'Local dimming' set to 'Low' (the lowest setting) and equally a result, some vertical blooming tin can be seen in our test picture. The black uniformity picture with local dimming was taken with the local dimming set to 'High'.

Samsung MU8000 Average Room Off Picture

Samsung MU8000 Bright Room Off Picture

Screen Finish Semi-gloss

The TV reflects quite a lot of lite, which may exist an issue for a brilliant room. With a few small light sources this is not a problem only if in that location are whatever big windows behind the Telly so the semi-gloss terminate diffuses light beyond the screen. This is worse than the college finish Q7F.

White Rest dE ane.84

Out of the box, the MU8000 is very accurate. With both the white remainder dE and Colour dE under 2.0, this performance is quite skillful and should exist more than than plenty for normal home use. The but aspect where the MU8000 is a scrap less accurate is the gamma, which is not tracking our target of 2.2 very closely. Only even then, the overall value is not far from our 2.2 target.

Samsung MU8000 Post Color Picture

White Balance dE 0.38

Color dE ane.xx

Gamma 2.20

After calibration the MU8000 is even more authentic, with the white balance dE error existence reduced to a mere 0.38 which is fantabulous. The Colour dE was reduced a chip less than the white balance dE, but at 1.20 this is still a nifty effect. As for the gamma, afterwards calibration it was flattened to track the target 2.2 gamma more closely.

Overall the calibration process went well, only as is oftentimes the case with Samsung TVs, the white balance calibration took a fleck longer to accomplish and the color space management could take been more responsive. But in the end, this TV is very accurate, and even with the process taking a flake longer, the results are very good.

The MU8000 can brandish our slope test pattern smoothly with only some small banding in the darker colour and as well in the darker region of the greyness scale. Overall, banding in normal content is non very visible and should non be a problem in everyday use.

Flicker-Free No

PWM Dimming Frequency 120 Hz

This Television receiver uses PWM at 120Hz to dim the backlight, starting at twenty/20 backlight setting. Lowering the setting downward to xiv/20 lowers backlight amplitude, while lowering it from 13/20 shortens the duty cycle, while aamplitude remains constant. Backlight that uses PWM results in duplications following moving objects, but does articulate up motion slightly.

Update 03/30/2018: Scaled the 'Luminosity' axis of the plots; now the Flicker-Free plots and the new BFI plot accept the same 'Luminosity' axis.

The MU8000 has a 120Hz console which can interpolate lower frame rate content. To do then, fix 'Auto Motion Plus' to 'Custom' and increase the 'De-judder' and 'De-mistiness' sliders. The 'De-judder' slider affects 30 fps or lower content, and the 'De-blur' slider affects 60fps content.

Frame Hold Fourth dimension @ 24 fps 28.4 ms

Frame Hold Time @ 60 fps 3.4 ms

The MU8000 is decent at playing content without stutter, however some stutter will be noticeable for low frame rate content such equally 24p movies due to the fast response fourth dimension, which results in only a short transition between frames.

Judder-Free 24p Yes

Judder-Complimentary 24p via 60p Aye

To remove judder from whatsoever source without calculation any soap opera effect, gear up the 'Motorcar Motion Plus Settings' to 'Custom', 'Blur Reduction' to 0 and 'Judder Reduction' to 0. Exit 'LED Clear Motion' since this does not relate to judder, simply to the black frame insertion feature.

Very low input lag. In game or PC mode, the input lag is 19-25 ms regardless of input, which is neat for nearly whatsoever game. PC mode had ~ 5 ms less input lag than game mode, just this is negligible. The input lag exterior game or PC mode is much higher merely is notwithstanding relatively low, and then navigating the Television and using peripherals feels responsive.

Update 06/13/2017: The PC mode HDR problems has been fixed as of firmware 1106, and the 4k @ 60 Hz @ 4:4:4 + 8 bit HDR input lag was remeasured every bit 21.7 ms.

HDR is non supported in PC fashion; the Television displays that it is showing HDR (and the gamma in the settings changes to ST. 2084 as information technology should), just it does not follow the PQ bend, as shown in this gamma measurement.

Annotation that different the 2018 model NU8000, this TV doesn't support a 120Hz input. It has a 120Hz panel, but this 120Hz motion is accomplished through the movement interpolation characteristic on lower frame rate content.

Update 06/xiii/2017: This problem has been fixed every bit of firmware 1106. HDR is at present displayed properly in PC manner, as shown past how this EOTF plot roughly follows the HDR PQ curve.
